Thomas Wilson and Mia Valente, 6th grade students at LES were recently honored as Middle Level Scholar Leaders at the Twentieth Annual Vermont Scholar Leader Awards Banquet on June 7, 2017 at Norwich University in Northfield, VT.
Approximately 375 students, educators, and parents attended, along with members of the VAMLE and NELMS boards. The keynotes were given by studetns: Anneka Williams from Harwood Union High School, and A.J. Braverman from Stowe High School. The students were presented with an award whose criteria included demonstrating academic initiative and scholarship, providing service to classmates and school, exemplifying positive attitudes and demonstrating leadership in the classroom and school activiites. The banquet celebrates the achievements of the middle level studetns who are representative of the many fine young adolescents in all middle level schools in the State of Vermont. Eighty-four students from 42 schools were honored this year.
Students are selected by their school based on the standards outlined in the "Vital Results" and "Fields of Knowledge" sections of the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities. The goal of the scholar leader program is to honor studetns who exhibit BOTH academic and leadership qualities.
Betsy Memoe, President of VAMLE, congratulated the studetns on their ability to balance the rigors of their academics while equally making positive contributions to their educational communitites for the benefit of all.
Jerry Frew, Executive Director of NELMS, parised the students for their willingness to help others and for choosing excellence in their personal and school lives. He acknowledged the many contributions of the parents and school personnel for creating environments that promote good citizenship and scholarship.
The even is organized by the Vermont Association for Middle Level Education (VAMLE) and the New England League of Middle Schools (NELMS) with supposrting sponsorship from Lifetouch National School Studios.
